Good evening/afternoon, Hope you all had a tolerable week. After last weeks terrible loss against Thomas at home, I thankfully had Dexter Morgan to raise my moods. The week we had ahead was jam-packed with games, a true test to our team especially considering the situation were in at the moment. We had Eckerd College away on Monday, Flagler at home on Wednesday and then Nova away last night.
We lost 1-0 at Eckerd even though we dominated the game. The Flagler game on wednesday is going to take more than one sentence to describe. As I arrived at the Pepin stadium on wednesday night I noticed the referee had breasts. I knew from that moment that this was going to be an interesting game. Half time: Tampa 0-3 Flagler. Shocking first half performance from the lads, but they didn't give up. They came back out after half time, 1-3, 2-3, 2-4, 3-4, 4-4, 4-5 Flagler! There is nothing worse than when you give your all and come away with nothing. We even scored a goal that put us into the lead but the “Referee” pulled it back and gave us a free kick where she should have played advantage.
Understandably the players were distraught. But the coach spoke wise words as he told us that it takes real heart to keep fighting when your 3-0 down. He was right, you look at our record and many people have forgotten about us this season, we could have easily thrown in the towel but thats not the spartan way.
Last night we played away at Nova and thankfully won! 2-1, goals coming from Ryan Griffin (Shock) and Dominic Cutrofello. I didn't attend the game though, instead I attended my first NHL game, a riveting experience which I'm sure wont be my last. I was extremely impressed by the fans creative chants for the Tampa Bay Lightning “LETS GO LIGHTNING, LETS GO *Clap Clap*” x5.
The overall fan experience beats most English Premier division games because of a few small facts. The seats: Even though we were in nose bleeds, we still had comfortably cushioned chairs. Practicality: In England theres some stadiums in which, depending on where your sitting you may not be able to see the score board. Here thats not a problem due the the large hovering quad screen. Chance of fame: At the breaks in the game they put the cameras on the fans, and you get the chance to be embarrassed for three seconds. Also the “Kiss’Cam” is the coolest thing ever, I just await the moment they accidentally put the camera on a father & daughter.
Apart from the sporting activities this week, I've been expressing myself poetically in one of my writing classes . . . Yes I said “one of my”. We had to hand in a poetry portfolio and I will be sharing one of the poems on here next week.
I mentioned a few weeks ago about our Fifa apology rules. Well, one of the fore-fits to loosing by a certain amount of goals, was to play your opponent naked every game until you beat them. This terrible idea was only complimented by the arrival of my roommates father, who had come to visit from Iceland. Derek Robbie and Anthony Carabotta had played previously and Derek was handed the fore-fit of playing naked.
Runar’s father was on his way back up to the room with him as this circus act was taking place. They entered the room to see Derek sitting in the chair, butt naked, with his trousers (pants) and pants (underpants) around his ankles. He quickly scrambled to put them back on and then nervously attempted to shake his hand. Runar’s father declined. I don't think I could have thought of a better story if you asked me to make one up, just perfection, pure perfection.
Any-who, this coming week presents the obstacle of St.Leo University. If we win this game we are into the conference championship, our only chance of a trophy this year. so pray for us, please. It also, on Thursday is my mothers birthday and the poem I will be posting on saturday will dedicated to her.
Have a great week, and wrap up as I know its freezing back in London because the temperature is plummeting here, I mean 24 degrees in October!? thats just un-acceptable.
Thanks for reading,
Ty.
